Week 5

What training (college, technical school, on-the-job training) have you received in order to do your job?

Scott: He went to college for four years.

Lacey: Lacey went to school, not to be a food manager, but rather as a liberal arts degree. She had no idea what she wanted to be so she dabbled in many subjects (science was where she leaned towards) finally she decided to leave the college life and just happened to end up owning a business.

Week 3/4

Part 1- What difficulties or frustrations do you face in your job?

Scott finds that explaining to other people what or how to do something is difficult. Also, having everyone follow the sam steps is important because "one man may lay out the electric boxes, and the other man will have to mount them". Communication is VERY important, and it is also important to know what all of the electricians shorthand symbols mean.

Part 2-  What part of your work do you find most fulfilling?

The best part of his job is that he gets to teach young mechanics like me how to build their own career.

Part 1- What difficulties or frustrations do you face in your job?

Lacey, as owner of Glacial Smoothies, has about a million things to think of at any given second. One of those main important things that is always there is the breaking down of electronics. Recently the cash drawer and printer broke. Ordering new parts is difficult especially when living in Alaska.

Part 2-  What part of your work do you find most fulfilling?

Being able to serve healthy food to locals is very fulfilling - knowing that what you give them is of high quality is fulfilling. Also, being able to work with the awesome staff is fulfilling because they are all so wonderful, and she is sorry to see them go home for the winter.

Week 2

What is you mentors daily routine? Describe a typical day of work from start to finish?

We start at the maintenance building with a group meeting/ pow-wow. Then we generally heads over to Soapy Smith's Parlor where he will work on electrical business until 10:00 (when I leave). At this point there is a group snack break. Afterwards he goes back to working on electricity at Soapy's. Weekly he goes to check water pressure, heat temperature, and general maintenance on the NPS building's boiler rooms.

Lacey's daily routine is kind of chaotic. There is always something new that needs to be fixed or shuffled. Generally she does baking/prep in the morning and then opens the clothing store. Sometimes she will help out in the kitchen. On Freight days she has to check off all of the freight.
